2010 — What Every Democrat Needs to Understand: Redistricting is Coming

2010 will be a critical year in Michigan. KCDP Chair David Pawloski makes this very clear: “We must get prepared now for an election cycle that will be like no other we have seen in Kalamazoo and in Michigan.”

In 2010 we will elect a Governor, state Supreme Court Justices, County Com-missioners, Representative to the U.S. House of Representatives, Michigan House and the most important Michigan State Senate in which two thirds of the seats will be open. Whichever party wins the majority in Lansing in 2010 will control the entire redistricting process and will draw the map that will be used for the next 10 years. We must all remember that in 2000 the Republicans controlled redistricting. They drew the lines and drew out Democratic U.S. Representa-tives David Bonior, Jim Barcia, Lynn Rivers and eliminated then Representa-tive Debbie Stabenow’s seat. We cannot allow that to happen again.

This brings us to the immense importance of the 20th.

In the next general election the 20th state senate district, which covers all of Kalamazoo County and two townships in Van Buren County, is up for grabs.

Lansing insiders, both Democrat and Republican, have pegged it as one of the most coveted seats in the entire state. In 2006 over three million dollars was spent by both sides in the 20th and this time it is an open seat The 20th may be the key seat which helps swing the state senate to the Democrats. That is why we will be asking for your help as we enter 2010. Let’s all work hard to elect a Democratic State Senator in the 20th District.
