About Mike O’Brien
Mike O’Brien - Democratic Candidate for Congress
I was raised the oldest son of a hard-working, single mother who often held down two and three jobs at a time in order to keep us in a good public school. Times were often hard, and when there were few alternatives for my mother, it was our government that fed me, and I will never forget it! I will never forget what my mother, and mothers like her all across this country go through, and where they can turn.
Twenty-eight years ago, about the time that Congressman Upton was becoming part of the entrenched Washington establishment, I joined the United States Marine Corps. I felt I had a debt to repay, and that service to others in the defense of our nation was a noble calling.
I rose through the ranks, and served with pride and distinction as a Reconnaissance Marine, always mindful of the honor of serving one’s nation.
After leaving the Marine Corps, I put myself through college while working full-time. I married my high-school sweetheart and started my professional life as a management consultant and business development expert, helping to grow companies of various sizes, across a wide range of industries.
Throughout this period I remained committed to my community and my church, serving with numerous non-profit organizations.
While building and leading the real estate department of the Holland-based trucking company, USF Holland, my family and I grew a successful farming operation in the Fennville and Holland areas. We raised grass-based, organic meats, sold directly to local families and restaurants. We grew our family farm until 2008, when the Bush recession devastated the local economy and we lost of dream.
Through hard work and good fortune, I quickly found work as the Director of Development for a leading offshore wind energy company, during which time I also served on Governor Granholm’s Offshore Wind Counsel.
Today I work for Herman Miller, where I help lead the development and commercialization of new product designs for Michigan’s leading furniture manufacturer.
I am running as the Democratic candidate for Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District because I love my country, and believe in service to a larger cause. I am committed to ensuring that all Americans, and particularly the next generations, have all of the blessings and opportunities that I have had in my life.
I am confident, that through hard work and dedication to the values that make Southwest Michigan great, we will be successful in ending a quarter of a century of Congressman Upton’s failed leadership, and the partisan gridlock in the House of Representatives.
The KCDP Executive Committee meeting follows at 6:30pm
