Three Things We Can Do To Support The Effort By The Kalamazoo Alliance For Equality (KAFE)
Fellow Kzoo Dems,
You may have seen the news that the Kalamazoo City Commission unanimously passed a non-discrimination ordinance on June 29. The ordinance will make it illegal in the City of Kalamazoo to fire someone, deny them a home, or kick them out of a restaurant or hotel just because they are gay or transgender.
Anti-equality groups are out
petitioning right now to try to repeal the ordinance. There are three things we can do to support the effort by
the Kalamazoo Alliance For Equality (KAFE) for a more inclusive Kalamazoo and to keep the ordinance.
1.) Go to www.SupportKalamazoo.com right now and sign the online statement of support for the non-discrimination ordinance. We want to be able to show that thousands of people think ending discrimination against gay and transgender people is the right thing to do. Bonus: Use the Tell-A-Friend feature after you sign to send the website to two of your friends.
2.) Adopt day to canvass. The Kalamazoo County Democratic Party is planning to canvass for three hours on Tuesday, July 14 from 6:30-9:30pm. We’ll be meeting at the old Nadine’s Coffee (2914 Portage Street) to get a training on how to talk about the issue and then hit the doors. Let’s make sure our Party is well represented. Please RSVP to David Topping: 313-319-9892 or " target="_blank">
3.) Be consistent and prioritize equality. If you’re looking for a project to keep you busy this summer and for a good cause, or maybe you just can’t make it on Tuesday, consider canvassing to help support the Non-Discrimination Ordinance. Pro-equality advocates are canvassing every Tuesday (6:30-9:30pm), Thursday (6:30-9:30pm), Saturday (1:30-4:30pm), and Sunday (3:30-6:30pm). Locations vary. Contact David Topping for questions or signing up for a shift: 313-319-9892 to " target="_blank">
