It's happening right here, right now:
Feds revoke status of WMU international students
|
Four international students at Western Michigan University are in limbo after their legal status was quietly revoked by federal officials. That comes as international students across the country are learning their visas have been abruptly canceled. The change of status puts these students’ residency at risk and could leave them vulnerable to deportation. In a statement posted online, WMU said neither it nor the students were notified about the status changes. “The WMU staff members who routinely monitor (the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System) discovered the terminations last week and informed affected individuals that their SEVIS record had been terminated,” according to the statement.
Ruby Robinson, the senior managing attorney for the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, said he’s worried about the impact these surprise revocations will have on other foreign students. “The concern we have is about due process and fairness,” he said. In the past, foreign students’ legal status has only been challenged in cases where they’re not following the rules or they break the law. In those cases, they were given the chance to appeal the change. That no longer seems to be the case. “This is going to have a chilling effect” on every other international student in the U.S. He urged students worried about their status to seek legal advice through groups such as the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Meanwhile, a WMU spokesperson said the university is working with the affected students. NowKalamazoo has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
